A wrong way driver on Interstate 5, south of Red Bluff, placed two drivers in the hospital, Saturday afternoon.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, calls started to come into their dispatch center around 3:45 p.m. for a driver who could be drunk or suffering a medical emergency.

The driver, later identified as Edward Sanders, 78, of Corning, then crossed over the center divide and started driving against wrong way traffic. According to witnesses, the wrong way driving occurred for about half a mile.

Sanders' vehicle then crashed head on into a Honda Civic being driven by Manuel Delapuente, 26, of Red Bluff.

Both drivers were reported as having major injuries and taken to area hospitals.

Investigation into the cause of the crash is still on going.
