CHP officers made a shocking discovery during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 near Red Bluff. A vehicle contained nearly $400,000 in cash believed to be linked to narcotics sales.

The suspect is 25-year-old Elvis Ruiz of Miami, Florida.

An officer with Red Bluff CHP said they pulled over Ruiz's 2017 Nissan Quest minivan for an unsafe lane change Friday afternoon near the Hooker Creek exit on northbound Interstate 5.

An officer noticed the strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The officer said the search of the vehicle found Ruiz had more than $385,000 in cash.

The officer requested a Shasta County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit assist to connect the money to narcotics sales. The Tehama County Narcotics Task Force was also brought in to assist in the investigation.

Ruiz was booked into the Tehama County Jail for possession of more than $100,000 in association with narcotics sales. As of Monday morning, he was no longer in custody.
