Travel trailer catches fire in Cottonwood blaze

Homeowner and her daughter speak with Cal Fire as firefighters work to put out the flames on their property.

Update as of Tuesday, 8:00 a.m.

Cottonwood residents had to escape an early morning fire after their travel trailer went into flames and spread to the dry vegetation nearby, resulting in a two-acre fire.

After interviewing the homeowner and her boyfriend, Cal Fire Tehama County believed the cause of the fire was a propane heater inside of a travel trailer next to the home on Del Norte Drive in Cottonwood.

The homeowner, Cheri Amstead, said she and her boyfriend were in her fifth wheel right next to the camper trailer when the fire started.

Amstead said she and her boyfriend were woken up by his cousin, who told them the trailer was on fire. The three said they had minutes to escape.

As they ran to safety Amstead said they heard a "loud boom" after she said the fire had spread to a propane tank on her property.

"It was fast, very fast and big. And then the propane tanks went. Everybody felt them and heard them... It was loud and very scary. You didn't know which way it was going to go," Amstead said, and added she is still shook up, but is thankful they made it out safely.

Both trailers and Amstead's barn were destroyed. Four chickens were inside the barn at the time of the fire, one of which has been accounted for.

The fire spread to the dry vegetation on the property and was last estimated at one and a half to two acres.

Fire crews are still on scene mopping up.

The fire did not spread to Amstead's home or other homes nearby.

Update as of Tuesday, 6:00 a.m.

Firefighters believe a fire in Cottonwood started in a travel trailer early Tuesday morning.

The fire started off of Del Norte Drive around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. The owner of the fifth wheel trailer told our reporter Courtney Kreider that she was next to the trailer when the fire started.

Officials are ruling out arson at this point. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
