BAYSIDE, Calif. —
A 19-year-old Arcata High School graduate died early Thursday morning after she fell from the 10th story of an apartment building in Minneapolis, according to the Minneapolis Fire Dept.
She was identified as Joia M. Simpson and she had recently moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of St. Thomas as a freshman. In a press release, the school said Simpson was interested in studying business.
"Her family most wants people to remember her beautiful smile," the release said. The school said she was a native of Bayside.
The MFD, who is investigating the incident, said at around 1 a.m. Nov. 1 they found Simpson lying outside The Bridges apartments in Dinkytown where she had fallen from the 10th floor. Officials said the death was an accident.
MFD Assistant Chief Bryan Tyner said the incident is believed to have occurred in an outdoor lounge area on the 10th floor. Others were believed to have been outside with her and were trying to help when firefighters arrived.
Officials are not commenting on whether drugs or alcohol are considered a factor.
