EPD: Man casing cars with bolt cutters arrested in Eureka

A man was arrested in Eureka Sunday morning after officers with the Eureka Police Dept. (EPD) noticed him casing vehicles with bolt cutters.

On Feb. 11 at about 11:20 a.m., EPD officers responded to the 600 block of J Street for the report of a suspicious person with bolt cutters casing vehicles. Officers said they then contacted a man matching the description of the report and identified him as 20-year-old Austin Porter.

Porter was detained and searched due to being on probation for burglary and falsifying his identity, the EPD said, adding that he was found to be in possession of burglary tools and heroin.

One officer noted he had taken several vehicle burglary reports in the downtown area over the last 24 hours and had surveillance from one of the reports. The EPD said officers were able to determine that Porter was, in fact, the suspect in the surveillance images.

Porter was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for vehicle burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of heroin and probation violation, according to officers. Probation was contacted and authorized a hold, and an investigation into the additional vehicle burglaries is ongoing, the EPD said.
