WILLITS, Calif. — The man suspected of committing the murder-suicide has been identified as 49-year-old Michael David Wilkins of Willits, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has confirmed the deaths of three people found in a Willits home Thursday were the result of a murder-suicide.
An 8-year-old boy and his mother were shot and killed by his biological father, who then killed himself, the MCSO reported Friday morning. Their bodies were discovered Thursday afternoon.
A worried acquaintance of the family called the sheriff's office at around 2 p.m. on Jan. 10. When deputies got to the home on Hearst Road, they noticed blood on the floor through the window, the MCSO said. The three bodies were then discovered.
The suspect, whose name is being withheld while family is notified, used a stolen gun to carry out the murder-suicide, the sheriff's office said. The gun was stolen from the person who requested the welfare check, according to the MCSO.
The suspect and the 32-year-old woman he killed were in a romantic relationship, according to the sheriff's office. There have been no prior documented incidents of domestic violence involving the family, the MCSO said.
Autopsies are scheduled for Jan. 15.
