Authorities searching for a family whose SUV plunged into a Northern California river have found the body of a woman.

Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman says the body was found Friday morning about 7 miles south of where the family's SUV fell into the rain-swollen Eel River last week.

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) said the woman was found on exposed ground that had been covered by the river in recent days because of a storm. Officials initially thought the remains were that of a child, but later clarified that it was a woman.

The body hasn't yet been identified, but authorities have been searching for four members of the Thottapilly family of Santa Clarita: a man and wife and their two children. Officials said an autopsy will likely be done on April 17.

Searchers continue to look for the missing family members and their vehicle, which is believed to still be submerged somewhere in the Eel River.
