Sen. McGuire commends Gov. Newsom's suspension of death penalty

North Coast Sen. Mike McGuire released a statement Wednesday morning commending Gov. Gavin Newsom's decision to suspend the death penalty in California.

Sen. McGuire called it "the right step to take," saying the death penalty is "both incredibly costly and burdensome" while "disproportionately condemning people of color and those with disabilities."

You can read the senator's statement in its entirety below:

The death penalty is an archaic and unjust system, disproportionately condemning people of color and those with disabilities. I commend Governor Newsom for his decisive action today to place a moratorium on the death penalty in California. There is absolutely no evidence that the death penalty makes Californians safer, and it is both incredibly costly and burdensome. This is the right step to take, while the legislature and the administration work together to make our criminal justice system stronger and more just.
