Students at St. Bernard's elect Messner, Arroyo, Mantova and Bonino in mock vote
EUREKA, Calif. —
St. Bernard's Academy in Eureka held a candidate forum Thursday during which contenders in the city's upcoming city council race debated in front of students. Afterwards, the students participated in a mock vote, the results of which were announced Friday morning.
All 12 of Eureka's city council candidates took to the stage in the school auditorium.
"One of the things we tried to stress was to get students to be participants in democracy," John Renteria, a government teacher at the school said. "And an event like this lets them see that there are real people who are making real decisions that affect them locally."
In the end, the students cast their votes for four final winners, one from each ward and a mayor. The winners of the mock election were Joe Bonino from Ward 5, Natalie Arroyo from Ward 3, Anthony Mantova from Ward 1 and Heidi Messner for mayor.
