Trinidad mother arrested after toddler dies from being left in car for 10 hours
WILLITS, Calif. —
A Trinidad woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon, after officials say her 18-month-old son died when she left him in a car for 10 hours.
According to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), deputies were dispatched to the Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits after Alexandrea Scott, 23, brought her toddler, Chergery Teywoh Lew Mays, in on June 20.
MCSO reported that the initial investigation indicated that the child had been accidentally left inside a vehicle for several hours while Scott was at inside a home on Mitomkai Way.
Further investigation showed that while Scott was there, she was inside the home socializing with people while her child was left in the back seat of her car. The car was reportedly parked in front of the residence with the windows rolled up. Officials said the child was left unattended in the back seat of the vehicle with the windows rolled up for about 10 hours.
Scott was subsequently arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail for willfully causing or permitting a child to suffer great bodily injury or death, MCSO reported.
