2 deputies stabbed, suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in Crescent City

The scene at the officer-involved shooting on Madison Ave. in Crescent City.

On Monday morning Jan. 22 , Crescent City California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a call for shots fired and an officer down near the 300 Block of Madison Ave. According to CHP Public Information Officer Brandy Gonzalez, two Del Norte County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call for a disturbance between two roommates at one of the homes at the location.

"At around 9:35 we heard 'officer down, shots fired,' so that's when we came to assist," Gonzalez said. "When we arrived on scene they already had the suspect in custody."

Officials said both deputies received stab wounds. The CHP said deputies fired at the suspect who was found to have multiple gunshot wounds. All three were taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment. The suspect later died at the hospital, according to Gonzalez.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office said, "Both deputies were ultimately injured but are expected to make full recoveries."

Gonzalez advised the public to be aware that altercations can escalate into dangerous situations and advises people to stay safe if they ever hear shots fired. "Stay in your homes, take cover," Gonzalez said. "Don't try to respond to the incident; we just don't want you actually entering a scene."

The names of the deputies and the suspect have not yet been released.
