Westhaven man arrested after deputies uncover slew of drugs and a weapon

A McKinleyville man was arrested in Westhaven Friday after a deputy patrolling the area stopped him on a traffic violation, leading to the discovery of a slew of drugs and a weapon, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO).

The HCSO said due to several vehicle burglaries recently reported on Scenic Drive, deputies have increased patrols in Westhaven.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 9, a deputy patrolling Scenic Drive noticed a Black Ford F250 with expired tags near Luffenholtz Beach County Park, officials reported.

The HCSO said upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy saw several prescription medication bottles without labels on them, and an expandable metal baton inside.

The two occupants of the truck were detained, officials said, and deputies searched the vehicle. The HCSO said the deputies uncovered over 3 grams of methamphetamine, over 3 grams of heroin, oxycodone pills and other drug paraphernalia.

Lucas Lee Hawthorne, 33, of McKinleyville, was arrested on the following charges: possession of a billy club, possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia. They said the second occupant of the vehicle was released at the scene.

Anyone with information for the HCSO regarding related criminal activity in the Westhaven area is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 707-445-7251 or the HCSO crime tip line at 707-268-2539.
