Heat wins, Colt 45s fall in Northstate baseball

The Chico Heat won their home opener and the Colt 45s dropped their series opener in summer league baseball action Friday night.

The Heat topped visiting Klamath Falls 11-8 in their home opener. They are 3-0 to start the Great Western League season. Chico hosts the Gems again Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.

The Colt 45s dropped their series opener against the visiting Seattle Studs, 8-2.

Redding starter Mason Verhees (0-1) struggled with his control in 3 1/3 innings, walking four and giving up three hits. He was charged with three unearned runs and took the loss. Studs righthander Mitchel Viydo pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk for his first win of the season.

The Colt 45s host the Studs Saturday and Sunday night at Tiger Field in Redding.
