Redding native Megan Rapinoe, a member of the U.S. Women's National Team, and her partner Sue Bird, a 9-time WNBA basketball all-star with the Seattle Storm, made media history - together.

The two appear on the cover of the annual ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue, the first gay couple to do so.

"To have this really unique vehicle to do that, to celebrate who we are in our sport," Rapinoe told ESPN. "But also the fact that we'll be the first gay couple. Its pretty amazing, considering the times we are in."

Rapinoe, who along with her twin sister grew up in the Palo Cedro area before launching storied soccer careers, has been an advocate for LGBTQ rights.

This year's Body Issue is the 10th published by ESPN The Magazine and features current and past athletes from a wide spectrum of athletics backgrounds, appearing without clothes in an effort to show the beauty of the athletic human form.
