Northstate Heisman winner surprised at Shasta football banquet

Shasta High School senior Vince Smith, holding trophy, is flanked by sponsors from Cronic Disaster Services after receiving the KRCR Northstate Heisman for the 2017 season. The award was presented to Smith, surrounded by teammates, at their annual football awards banquet at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Redding, January 24, 2018.

On a night to celebrate their team's remarkable 2017 high school football campaign, Shasta High School senior running back Vincent Smith didn't have the Northstate Heisman on his mind.

Especially when coach J.C. Hunsaker ushered the starting offensive lineup from the season's CIF finalists to stand at the front of the team's banquet hall.

"At first I had no idea, I was like, 'oh, he's gonna give it to the offensive line,' because I was thinking about it," Smith said after receiving the trophy. "I'm really excited to have it now."

Representatives of Cronic Disaster Services, sponsors of the Xtra Point Northstate Heisman Trophy, were on hand to help present the award to Smith. The award is given annually by KRCR to the most valuable high school football player in the Northstate. KRCR's Brent Weber announced the winner during the team's annual awards banquet at the Veterans Hall in downtown Redding.

Shasta finished the 2017 season 12-2, topping Chico to win their first CIF Northern Section title in 29 years. They whipped Marin Catholic in the 3AA NorCal regional bowl game before losing to Bishop Diego in their first state title game appearance.

Smith was named the Northern Section Player of the Year by CIF/MaxPreps, while coach J.C. Hunsaker was named Northern Section Coach of the Year. Seth Park, Anthony Beltran, Dakota Mosby, Levi Peterson, Troy Lyons, Detrius Kelsall and Kurtis Gipson were also named to the CIF/MaxPreps All-Northern Section First Team.
