Xtra Point: Foothill, Gridley roll in football playoffs

REDDING, Calif. - The Foothill Cougars raced to a huge lead before coasting past Red Bluff, 49-34, in NSCIF Division II football playoff action. The Cougars victory sets up a second-round matchup with top-seeded Shasta, which had a bye opening week.

Other highlighted winners seen on this week's Xtra Point include Gridley, Sutter, Colusa and Durham.

The Cougars were led by the passing of quarterback Jayden Gordon and the running of Jeshua Womack. They will play at Shasta in a game expected to kick off Friday night at 7:00 p.m.

In DIII play in Gridley, the Bulldogs posted their fourth straight win, downing Corning 28-7. Their next task looms large. Gridley will travel to top-seeded Sutter for round two. The Huskies dominated Orland 56-7 to improve to 10-1.

A late comeback in Weaverville fell short, as the Trinity Wolves fell to Colusa, 35-28. Colusa next meets East Nicolaus in NSCIF Division IV.

In another DIV matchup, the Durham Trojans beat Hamilton, 45-13. Durham plays Pierce in the next round.

In other Friday finals, Modoc shut out Etna, 20-0, in Division V play. The Braves will next travel to Fall River, who had a bye the opening week.

The Biggs Wolverines exacted revenge on Quincy, as the Wolverines beat the Trojans 14-7. Quincy won their regular season matchup 35-12. Biggs travels to Chester next week.

In NSCIF 8-man semi-final action, Big Valley rolled over Los Molinos, 74-8. The unbeaten Cardinals meet Princeton for the NSCIF 8-man title next week.

In another note, Chico High School announced that they will play their second-round home playoff game against Pleasant Valley High School on PV's home field. Chico does not have a home stadium this season, though they expect to play in their new facility next season. The school was considering playing the game at Chico State University.

In NSCIF volleyball at Red Bluff High School, Fall River, Durham, West Valley, Shasta and Chico all earned Northern Section CIF championships Friday night.
